There was once a happily married couple who had travelled the world and done many things. Their final adventure they decided would be to give themselves the gift of a child.

The pregnancy was simple and joyful, and when the summer months bloomed a daughter was born to them.

But with the passing of the season came a turn in the health of the mother who seemed to fade with the sun.

By the month of October, she had shriveled and faded from a strange disease and by winter's end had passed painfully away

leaving her husband to grieve and to take care of their daughter alone.

To help with the baby, the husband hired for himself an old nurse, but despite her many years of experience could not quiet the cries of the child. From early morning to late evening the girl would cry and grow fitful and squirm in the nurse's arms and then the milk from the stove was warm to the correct

temperature the child would not take a drop.

And yet throughout the dark hours of the night and early morning, the child would not make a sound

and slept peacefully and satisfied.

After many weeks of this behavior,

the father had begun to lose faith in the child
