deputies with the Letcher County Sheriff's Office in Kentucky

responded to the county courthouse after receiving reports of shots fired.

When they arrived on the scene they were directed to the area where the shots were

And as it so happened, it was from the chambers of Kentucky District Judge Kevin Mullins.

When deputies made their way inside, they found the 54-year-old a judge deceased from apparent

gunshot wounds. And at the scene, they took a surprising suspect into custody.

The alleged suspect was identified as Letcher County Sheriff, Sean Stein's, the person you would least expect in such a case.

Though a motive isn't known at the time of this writing, there are some things to note.

It was publicly known that Sheriff Stein's time in office was marred with controversy.
