Here are your Washington headlines of the day. Number one, Senate Republicans get ready to pick a new leader for the first time in 18 years.

Number two, what to watch on House Republicans conference rules. And number three, the latest from the vault.

All right, Jake, let's get into it. All eyes are going to be on Senate Republicans this morning as it has come down to the wire on the fight for who will lead the Senate Republican conference. Mitch McConnell, obviously stepping down.

And the successor is a race between Senate minority whip John Thune, Senator John Cornyn from Texas and Senator Rick Scott from Florida.

With President-elect Donald Trump pushing GOP lawmakers to hit the ground running in January,

the new Senate Majority Leader will be in the middle of just about everything during the 119th Congress.

Jake, a secret ballot.

So nobody knows who is going to come out on top.

But this has been a race with a lot of twists and turns soon, I think for a while, seen as

the front runner.

But Rick Scott in particular and with a lot of backing from Trump allies is giving him a run for his money.

Yes. So listen, I don't know who's going to win this. I'm not going to make any predictions here.

I've had a lot of Senate Republicans that I've talked to that Bres and Andrew and Max have talked to who have said Thune will

win easily.

I don't know the answer to that.
