Summary

Part one of a new series from Pastor Erwin McManus on the importance of self-mastery. To begin the journey of self-mastery, you must first learn how to take ownership over your life and choices. When we abdicate our responsibility for our choices, we then give away our power to change our future.

Out of the context of Genesis 3, Pastor Erwin relates the story of Adam and Eve and how neither took ownership for their actions in the Garden. Pastor Erwin insightfully unpacks the scriptures and the consequences of the fall of humanity away from God’s original intention. Blame was at the root of man’s separation from God, and the beginning of a history of no ownership between humanity and our creator.

If you desire to change your life and create a better future for yourself and your family, but don’t know where to begin – this talk is for you!

Hello, this is Erwin Raphael McManus. I'm the lead pastor of Mosaic. Welcome to our podcast.

Thank you for joining us today. I hope this talk inspires you, encourages you,

0:18.4

and transforms you, and that this is just the beginning of a conversation between you and Jesus.

Enjoy the message. One of the great advantages of living for six decades is that you get to

0:32.4

see life played out. You get to see theories and ideologies, philosophies, beliefs played out

0:38.8

in real life over a significant amount of time. And one of the things that has really struck me

0:45.0

over the years are how many people start so well and then their journey seems to end abruptly.

0:53.5

I'm not talking about the end of their lives, but the end of their dreams, the end of their success,

1:00.2

the end of their influence, the end of their credibility, because their life just fell apart.

1:06.8

And one of the great challenges when you're a person of faith, when you're a follower of Jesus is

1:11.4

to try to understand what it means to be a disciple, to be a disciple of Jesus. And in fact,

1:17.6

probably one of the most asked questions by people who have been Christians for a long time is

1:23.1

where do I go get disciples? The discipleship has probably been studied and dissected more than

1:29.4

any concept around the Christian faith. And yet the reality is that the things were often

1:35.2

times told to do, which are important to spend time in prayer, to spend time in the scriptures,

1:41.2

to spend time in church, to spend your life in these particular disciplines. You find

1:49.2

are critical, but they're not necessarily the essential ingredients that allow a person to

1:56.5

to sustain their journey for the long haul. I've seen people who pray and who read the Bible

2:02.4

and who believe sincerely and who go to church crash and burn. And one of the things that I've

2:08.4

had to grapple with is that there are some essential practices inside of the lifestyles of

2:16.4

women and men who thrive, who develop resilience, who have the capacity not only just to start well,

2:23.4

but to finish well. And the concept that I want to unwrap for the next few sessions is around
