Who controls Bitcoin?

The person or persons who call themselves Satoshi Nakamoto

devise Bitcoin in 2008

expressly so that no single entity could control it.

It was because Satoshi did such a good job

that by the middle of the next decade,

the Bitcoin community was engulfed in endless warring over how to handle the

network's 1 megabyte block size limit. Without clear consensus for one proposal or another, not much actually changed.

Then, in May 2017, a group of business leaders got together and made a bet.

He spoke with our senior producer, Nate Nelson, to try and make sense of what Seguit 2X was and was not.

To some, Seguit 2X was a vital network upgrade that would massively boost the value of Bitcoin and to others it was a power grab at best and an

attack at worst.

What was Seguit 2X in your view?

I think it was a misguided attempt for compromise at a time when the debate had shifted from which is the most technically

efficient way of addressing scaling to a secondary debate, a meta debate if you like, which was who should have the power to make this decision.

The first mistake of Segwith 2X had nothing to do with technology.

A group of wealthy business leaders had got together in a swanky New York hotel

wrote up their idea for how to upgrade the network and didn't

bother asking the rest of the community what they thought.
