that's John Pina. He's over there at the RNC in Milwaukee, and he has sent us this report,

which he filed overnight. Donald Trump's been practicing

for his first moment, his big moment, here on the stage at the Republican National Convention.

And this is it. Normally it is a vast basketball arena. Now it's been converted into the site of the

RNC. When it's full and it will be very full it must

feel a little bit like the Roman Colosseum where many came to meet their life or

death at the claws and the jaws of hungry lions and at the pleasure of their

leader except here they compete if they can for the favor of the Maga faithful.

People like Trump's beaten rival, Ron DeSantis, who went down well, or unlike the old-school

Senator Mitch McConnell, who was booed out of the hall.

The emperor himself sits on the balcony in total command, loved and worshipped after his brush with death at the weekend.

His ear dressed like an honourable war wound, signalling his approval with a lift of an eyebrow or the ghost of a smile.

But soon he'll make his way back to the stage to accept his party's nomination.

After dodging that assassin's bullet, he promised a more emoliant tone.

He suggested he'd seek to reunify this divided country.

Would he do that?

Could he do that?

Or will the old fire-breathing, divisive Donald Trump be back?

It won't be that hard to please his followers.
