Outside the room, through the little window that provides his only glimpse of the outside world,

he can hear carpenters at work.

They've been banging and sawing all day, making a racket as they work

on improvements to the castle. But the noises of the workmen are the least of Edward's concerns.

This place stinks.

Somewhere underneath the room in one of the castle's cellars is a place where old meat is thrown.

It's hardly ever cleared out and the reek that rises up from it is beyond all description.

Not for the first time, Edward feels the sting of bile rising up the back of his throat.

He gags and tries to swallow the burning acid. Trying to get some relief from

the filthy stench, he scrambles up towards the little window and pushes his face up against the bars.

As he does, he catches sight of one of the carpenters, a young man who's gathering up his

tools and preparing to leave the building site for the day.

Edward meets the guy's eyes and nods a despondent greeting.

All his life he's found it easy to talk to. despondent greeting.
