The French soldiers squeeze themselves up the narrow tunnel,

holding their breath and trying not to gag.

Flies buzz around them. It's wet. It's slimy and it stinks.

Above them they hear the sounds of people moving around.

Feet shuffling. Someone clearing their throat.

A hawk and a noisy spit. Then one of the sounds they've been dreading the most.
