Hello and welcome to a scrum five special on a very important day for Welsh rugby.

It would be easy to sit here and say here we go again because we've had a fair share of those in recent times.

But this one feels even more significant with staff and players worried about their future,

fans worried about their clubs as the Welsh Rugby Union today confirmed their proposal to cut to teams.

Joining me to discuss the day's news, Alex Cuthbert, Jonathan Davis and Ashton

Hewitt. Before we hear your reaction, let's just run through the headlines. So the main

headline, of course, is the Welsh Rugby Union proposing cutting the number of men's professional

rugby teams down from four to two. It is a proposal. There were four models on

the table today. One of the models included keeping the four teams, but on unequal funding. Another

model looked at potentially going down to three on equal funding or three on unequal funding.

But this is the preferred option from the

Welsh Rugby Union. Still unclear if the two proposed teams will be new or existing ones.

And a six-week consultation begins today with a decision made by the end of October.

The approach we've designed,

according to Director of Rugby,

Dave Radden, is respectful, thorough, inclusive.

We encourage people to challenge our ideas.

So they will engage in conversations with all stakeholders from today.
