Welcome to Scoop, where you get the Scoop on this week's news. My name is Jenna, and this is Smarter News.

0:12.8

Hi, everyone. Welcome to Scoop. It is Monday, March 9th. We have quite a bit of news to get through and to today. In fact, there's quite a few different developing stories that are in progress as we're speaking at this moment. And so I want to get you caught up from the last few days of news and also look a little bit forward into the future to think about, well, what are some of the big stories in the week ahead? Just real quick here, before I leap into some of the more international news, although we're going to

0:37.5

sprinkle on a little bit of the U.S. economy in this as well. The U.S. House of Representatives is

0:43.1

currently not in Washington, D.C. They're back in their home districts. So that's going to take

0:47.6

a little pressure outside of Washington, D.C., take it off of our nation's capital. When you have fewer

0:53.0

people that can jump in front of a camera, that can affect just kind of the news that you're getting during the week. The Senate is still in session, but when you don't have both there at the same time, we tend to not have quite as much news coming from Washington, D.C. overall. So there's going to be a lot of focus overseas this week and rightfully so. But there's a few

1:12.2

things that happened over the last few days that I want to make sure to catch you up on.

1:15.2

So one of the first things I want to show you today is what is called a dignified transfer.

1:21.1

So a dignified transfer is what took place over the weekend where the president, along with

1:26.5

the White House leadership, greeted those

1:30.5

returning back to U.S. soil from overseas. These are the bodies of six service members who were

1:37.7

killed in action because of the conflict that is ongoing with Iran. I'm noticing the president

1:43.7

is now using different language.

1:45.4

He's talking about this as war. You know, without an official war declaration, we're sort of in

1:52.2

that spot right now early on in this conflict where I want to use the most accurate terminology

1:57.1

for you. If the president is using the term war, they tend to use the word conflict

2:01.2

because we don't have an official declaration. But I'm not trying to split Harris here. I'm just

2:05.1

trying to be accurate. And because we're in this sort of gray area still of what is this and

2:12.3

what will it be, I think it's important to think about that. But I do want to point out that

2:16.4

different terminology is used.

2:18.5

The dignified transfer, this process, has relatively been new in the modern era.

2:26.6

Of course, it dates back to tradition in military.
