How safe are we?

0:04.5

That's a big question we're asking with so many of the different news stories we're covering this week.

0:08.5

I'm Jenna. This is smarter news.

0:10.1

And I have some big updates today from the Pentagon, from the White House.

0:13.7

And on a story, many of you are interested in, but is likely not going to get the same amount of coverage simply because we have a huge global story in front of us and that continues to be the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel,

0:25.0

and Iran. You notice I didn't use the term war. We have not declared war yet that could come,

0:30.2

albeit we've been in conflicts for many years, decades, in fact, for example, in Afghanistan

0:34.4

without an official war declaration. So it's something just to consider.

0:38.6

How safe are you? Sounds like a very basic question. And I'm asking it for a reason.

0:43.8

As I'm noticing the news coverage related to Iran, I'm seeing the pylon effect that typically

0:48.9

happens after the initial 24 hours of breaking news. There's a pile on effect not only by journalists,

0:54.6

but by those providing information, you know, more statistics, more data, more ways of trying

1:00.3

to explain a story. And sometimes that's very helpful. We want more facts. Certainly want more

1:04.8

facts. And data can be very helpful at times. But we never want to lose what's really at the core of a story. And that's usually

1:13.3

a very simple question. It doesn't have to be overcomplicated. And in this particular case,

1:18.3

when we're talking about what's happening around the world, specifically Iran, we're asking

1:22.2

that question today. How safe are we? You know, how safe are we physically? How safe are we economically? What's our economic security like, for example? So you can ask that question in a lot of different ways. And that's what we're going to focus on today, because as I looked at the brand new information, it's all coming back to this key question, which is, you know, how safe are we? Is this move in the Middle East going to make us in future generations of Americans safer,

1:45.0

or is it going to make us less safe? We probably don't have the answer to that question,

1:48.6

but that's fundamentally the question at the center of this news story. So instead of getting to the

1:53.5

White House and the Pentagon first, I actually just want to talk about you because there was a really

1:56.5

interesting article in the Associated Press that highlighted the economic side of this conflict. And I just

2:02.4

want to show it to you, not because I want to prioritize that over the lives that are in jeopardy
