A closer look at a "state of emergency" at the U.S. Southern Border, and where Democrats and Republicans agree.

Why some argue we are not in a recession while one famous economist says danger lies on the horizon (and beyond).

The reason to keep an eye on Pres. Putin's unusual trip as we watch for what's next in Ukraine, and how your investment in eastern Europe has led to one of the highest levels of military spending in years.

Hey, everybody. Welcome to Scoop. It's our final scoop, believe it or not, of 2022. And I have to start

0:08.3

off with a thank you. Thank you for making Scoop possible. When we started the year, I never even

0:13.5

imagine launching something like Scoop and insider group of people that really believe in nonpartisan

0:18.7

news and want to help support our mission. And we've,

0:21.8

I think this is our 12th, 12th, 12th, 13th. I've lost track. It's so much fun. But this has really

0:30.7

been a great experience of trying to figure out again how to serve you better when it comes

0:35.4

to news delivery. And hopefully we've benefited

0:38.5

you in giving you that cheat sheet at the beginning of the week and a little bit of a special

0:42.0

report like we're doing right now. And this has just been awesome. And I've appreciated getting

0:46.9

to know each and every one of you and really look forward to building out scoop more over the

0:51.8

next year. This has sort of been our soft launch period at the end of 2022. And we really look at 2023. It's hard to say that out loud as the year that we're really going to be able to provide for you a lot of little extras that we'd like to do on a regular basis as we get news throughout the week. So if you have any ideas or suggestions, we're always open to that. But in the meantime, I just want to say thank you. So we're going to pick up scoop at the beginning of the year. Our first scoop will be that very first Monday of January. We'll be back at it, but we hope that you enjoy the holidays. And I've sort of positioned this scoop to be something that you can listen to at really any time. We're now at the end of the year,

1:28.7

and it's a time to take a deep breath and sort of think back, well, where did we come from?

1:33.4

Where are we now? What does the world actually look like at the end of 2022? That said,

1:40.1

there's some limitations. I'm going to show you a lot of different things today. We're going to

1:42.9

talk a lot about some data. But it's interesting symbolically. I think it's sort of a symbolic. There's like a

1:49.0

metaphor in this somewhere when you look at data because data is always backwards looking and we're

1:53.7

not going to get the final data for 2022 until we're in 2023. So if I asked you, for example,

2:00.6

how do you feel about this year? You might have one answer now, but in a couple of weeks, you might think about it completely different. We still have, you know, 10 days left of the month of the year. And you may think of things completely different in another couple of weeks. So I'm going to show you what we have. We'll add context for what we know, but there's always, there's always

2:18.4

part of the story that's developing. And so we'll leave a little room for that. Last year at this time,

2:23.1

we had no war in Ukraine. We didn't have the results for the midterm elections. We started to hear

2:28.8

about Omicron a lot at this point last year, but we didn't really know what that would look like

2:33.1

for the country until we got into January. So we've traveled a lot of ground. And so I'm going to skip around

...
