Summary

“I couldn’t compare myself, so there was no way for me to diminish my own beauty against somebody else’s” - Bozoma Saint John

When it comes to tapping into your most authentic self, Bozoma Saint John is unmatched. With an exceptionally fruitful career at companies like PepsiCo, Beats, Uber, and now Netflix, one might think that Saint John has always played by the corporate rulebook. That couldn’t be further from the truth. With an endless array of bold lipsticks, hairdos, and fits, she is living proof that a Black woman's right to self-expression and beauty doesn’t have to deter her right to success. In fact, this is what illuminates it. Tune in for an incredible conversation on Ghanian skincare, rejecting outdated beauty standards, learning when to let go of your job, and so much more. Enjoy!

Welcome back for another incredible conversation.

0:14.1

This week I am joined by Bozema St. John, also known as Boz, also known by her Instagram

0:20.3

handle, bad ass Boz.

0:22.2

She is currently the CMO of Netflix, no big deal.

0:25.7

She was previously the CMO of Endeavor, a chief brand officer at Uber, so she's clearly

0:31.5

an incredible boss, a legendary woman in business, but she's also incredibly glamorous.

0:37.8

And more important than her being glamorous, she's very true to herself.

0:41.7

She always shows up as her full authentic self, which I think is not as easy to do as

0:47.8

people talk about it, right?

0:49.2

People always say, show up as yourself, but how do you actually practice that and how do

0:52.4

you practice that at these really high levels of business that she's achieved?

0:57.2

She's also a public speaker, a mentor to many.

0:59.9

She's all around an incredible woman.

1:02.7

And of course, this is a really important conversation for me because I have a corporate

1:06.4

job, but I also love to change up my hair.

1:08.8

I also love to serve a look.

1:11.3

And I think unfortunately as women and even more so as black women, there is that tendency

1:17.2

to second guess the way that we're showing up in professional settings.

1:22.0

And there are those questions about how seriously will I be taken if I decide to wear

1:26.2

what I really want to wear or if I decide to do my hair in a different way?

1:30.1

And this is something that Bose and I spend a lot of time talking about in this episode.
