Welcome to the download of Moneybox Live, the program about your money. And today is all about helping young adults to save.

Young people are saving less. Only half of 22 to 29-year-olds have any savings at all, and that's down from 60% to decade ago. The question is why. Millennials are often portrayed as feckless spenders, wasting money on avocado on toast, soil lattes and Instagrammable holidays to far-flung destinations.

But it could well be argued that economic and social factors are to blame.

Well, let's hear first from millennial Mary, age 27.

She's defied the stereotype and has managed to save an astonishing £21,000 in just seven years.

I was very lucky, so I was able to live at home for a while once I left uni.

I was in quite a lot of minimum wage jobs, really.

So I was building a lot of my savings that way.

And then when I was in my current job, I moved out.

So then I was trying to get the cheapest rent I could get like cheap outgoing.

And I was making sure whenever I got a bonus of my work, I'd put that straight into my savings account as well.

So I wouldn't touch it at all.

Basically, I've never had a lot of money.

So I'm quite used to being quite frugal with my money in a way.
