Last week, if you wanted to rent a car but didn't want to do business with a car rental company that was in bed with the National Rifle Association,

furiously fillating National Rifle Association. You didn't have many options.

What a difference a week makes.

You know, actually I was about to say, what a difference a week and a pile of dead students

make?

But we've seen piles of dead students before and stepped right over

them. We've had eight school shootings in the United States since the first of this year,

scores of school shootings since the massacre at Columbine High School. And we've seen school shootings

with much higher body counts. Sandy Hook, where 26 were killed and two were injured, Virginia Tech, where 32 were killed and 23 were injured.

And nothing changed.

We stepped right over the bodies of those students, just as we stepped over the bodies of country music fans in Las Vegas and nightclub patrons in Orlando and movie fans in Colorado.

But this time, it's different.

Maybe it's the moral clarity and passion of the students at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, these theater kids and debate club members and Emma Gonzalez, the president of

the school's gay straight alliance, who now has twice as many

followers on Twitter as the NRA, those kids, these kids, these amazing kids, they don't seem to

suffer from the learned helplessness that prompted the rest of us to shrug off massacres

because the NRA was just too powerful. Or maybe in addition, we've reached the tipping
