Years ago, when I was a weird little kid, I would watch Firing Line with my dad. Firing

line was this program, a talk show on PBS, hosted by William F. Buckley Jr., who was this

right-wing douchebag, right, hosted this

political chat show on PBS. And I would watch it when I was a really little kid. And I have

distinct memories of watching this show and hearing respected media figures, political figures,

business leaders, defend segregation, defend bands on interracial marriage, advocate for basically flat

out period, end of discussion, racist shit, that you can no longer go on TV and talk up and

defend and expect to be employed anywhere the next morning.

And I've talked about this a lot when I've gone to colleges and talked about

where we are in LGBT civil rights in this country. And we're sort of pre that moment, right?

You can still go on TV and say shitty, shitty anti-gay things, advocate for just the most

homophobic, transphobic, bullshit, and be a respected member of the community, elected

to Congress, run for president

the next day without anybody getting in your face about it.

It is still a position that you can take publicly without fear of committing career

suicide, right?

And I would say, and I have said that I remember these racists going on TV and talking

this shit up, talking up segregation,

talking up bands on interracial marriage, defending it.
