1:02.3	And hearing the Pope say that, particularly after reading the Washington Post, ABC News poll numbers, reminded me of a conversation I had really recently with a friend who is a Bible-believing,
1:13.6	born-again Christian. Yes, a friend of mine who is one of those. We have a playful,
1:19.3	contentious relationship. We like to debate each other. We are actually friends. And we're thinking
1:24.0	about going on tour in an updated production of the odd couple.
1:28.2	But my friend asked me if gay people would be willing to settle for, would we compromise,
1:35.4	would we take civil unions with all the same, exact same rights, responsibilities, obligations,
1:40.3	everything that comes with marriage, but not marriage, civil unions.
1:44.6	Like if a bill was introduced that would legalize civil unions at all 50 states, would we accept that compromise?
1:51.4	They would let us have fundamentalist Christian conservatives who oppose marriage.
1:54.3	They would let us have civil unions in exchange for, I live in Washington State, exchange for us giving marriage back.
2:03.0	And I told my friend that, yes, we would so take civil unions in a fucking heartbeat.
2:09.9	We would accept civil unions in 1985.
