Regular listeners may remember my brother, Billy.

He's my older brother by about two years in change.

There's another sibling in between us because my parents were Irish Catholics.

And he has been with his partner, Colleen, for a very long time. They are very

much in love. They're a wonderful and beautiful couple. They don't live together. Billy has his

place and Colleen has her place. They spend almost all their time together. And they're also not

married. And they never want to be married. And they're never going to be married. And no one's pressuring them to marry anymore now that my mother's dead. Although I try to pick up the slack. No one could do it like mom could. And that's fine. And that's their choice to live together in sin and be cast into a lake of fire after they both die. But otherwise, whatever's. They don't want to get married. There's straight people who don't want to get married. That's the thing about marriage. It is not, although it is

legal everywhere for heterosexual couples to marry. It is not compulsory. Straight couples who do

not wish to marry, do not have to marry and have never had to marry. I haven't had to marry

for a very long time. As, you know, my brother Billy and

calling evidence. I, of course, am married to maybe you've heard me mention his name once or

twice an episode for the last 365 episodes. A little Terry Miller. We've been married for a long

time. We would have been married for a longer time. Had marriage been possible for us earlier, but it wasn't. But now it is. And we are. And so there you go. Some

straight people who can marry don't. Some gay people who can do. But not all gay couples who

are together have to marry any more than all straight couples like my brother Billy and his

partner have to marry. Mary is opt in. The New York Times this weekend in the Sunday Style section had a pretty hilarious article titled Gay Couples Choosing to Say I Don't by Kara Buckley. And it's just all about what's going on in the minds of all of these gay couples and a higher percentage of gay couples choose not to marry. But what's going on in their minds? Why don't they want to marry? And it's pretty interesting and it's a lot of stuff that we've heard before. But it's treated as if this is interesting and radical and new. Marriage is available to these people. And yet they do not wish to marry as if this is a new story, as if this hasn't been going on with straight people for a very, very long time.

Marriage has always been, as I said, opt in.

And not all straight people back when it was exclusively reserved for them.
