In the spring of 1993, Frank Salerno retired from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department

after more than 30 years on the job. Given the high-profile nature of Detective Salerno's

time with the force, along with the major cases he'd solved and countless young deputies he'd

mentored, a lavish retirement ceremony was held in his honor.

In attendance that night was Frank's son, by that time also an LA County Sheriff's deputy,

who was hoping to follow in his father's footsteps.

At one point during the speeches and the laughter, the food, and the open bar, the tears started flowing.

Why? Because also in attendance were several people, ordinary citizens, whom Frank had helped

during his long and storied career. Family members of victims whose murderers Frank had

personally slapped the cuffs on.

There were also survivors.
