As the temperatures in Los Angeles rise throughout the summer of 1985,

so does the body count of the Valley Intruder.

And his confounding M.O., or, more specifically, lack of any consistent methods,

make the jobs of the detectives on the case bafflingly impossible. And the killer

makes his motivations clear with satanic symbols left behind at his most recent murder scene.

If there's one thing law enforcement knows, it's that a killer who believes he's doing the devil's

work is an incredibly dangerous adversary.

The decade of the 1980s is, in a general sense, looked upon by historians as one of excess.

Everything seemed to be turned up, amplified, overdone, from fashion to music, film, and TV, and especially politics.

Now, that may seem a strange statement to make if you're a political junkie like I am. Why?

Well, because the 80s was dominated by, was defined by the conservative politics of Ronald Reagan.

So how does an incredibly conservative administration preside over a decade of indulgence,

excess, and runaway consumerism. To put a complex

socioeconomic set of principles and simple terms, I'll say this. The conservative or

Republican platform has long stood on the foundational idea of small government. Less federal

oversight, more leave us the hell alone.

One of the manifestations of this is the deregulation of several of our major industries.

Basically, you can do what you want and Uncle Sam won't interfere, especially the bankers.
