| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to the Wednesday, June 24th, |
| 0:07.8 | 2006 edition of the Sands Internet Stormsaurus Stormcast. |
| 0:12.7 | My name is Johannes Ulrich and today I'm recording from Jacksonville, Florida. |
| 0:18.1 | And this episode is brought you by the Sandsdot edu graduate certificate program in penetration |
| 0:23.1 | testing and ethical hacking. Yesterday I talked about 40 bleed, the attack where someone did compromise |
| 0:30.3 | 40 net firewalls and then used that access to harvest additional credentials. Well, today it's Sonic Wall. |
| 0:39.1 | Manuel looked at Sonic Wall firewalls that he worked at as part of his job and such, |
| 0:45.9 | and looked not just whether or not they were patched. |
| 0:49.5 | They were in 2024 some well-publicized vulnerabilities that allowed credential theft and, well, |
| 0:57.3 | the enemy had the same thing happen that happened with Fortinette that attackers came in, |
| 1:03.1 | used credentials they had harvested earlier, and recompromised firewalls after they were patched. |
| 1:09.8 | Well, so what Manuel looked at was how many of these firewalls were not just patched, |
| 1:17.9 | but also reconfigured after the patch was applied. |
| 1:22.8 | And one of the saddest part of this of the statistics here is that almost none, like 86% of the |
| 1:31.4 | firewalls, did not reconcile their credentials with Active Directory. So there were still |
| 1:37.4 | basically legacy credentials on the firewall itself that could have been compromised by an attacker |
| 1:43.0 | or maybe even accounts that an attacker |
| 1:45.1 | created. Also, 80% of the firewalls did not rotate their passwords. There are a couple |
| 1:53.7 | of things here that I think are sort of nice to have, like for example, some additional |
| 1:57.9 | filtering of which IP addresses can actually connect to the SL VPN here. |
| 2:03.7 | I forgive that for you because sometimes that's why you have the VPN in the first place, |
| 2:07.5 | because then you have people that travel all over the place, |
