All men are made in the image of God. Not all men are in the image of God. These two statements may seem contradictory, but they are not, because they reference different aspects of what it means to be an image of God — and what it means to be regenerate (i.e., to be on the path we call Sanctification). The regenerate man is in the image of God in a way that the unregenerate man is not, because the regenerate man is justified and is being sanctified. This distinction is key, and is often conflated (both accidentally and deceptively) in modern, Christian (at least seemingly) discourse.

A helpful way to think about the distinction: Last week, we went over the image of God with emphasis on image; this week, we go over the image of God with emphasis on of God.

The Welcome to the Stone Choir podcast. I am Corey J. Mahler.

0:41.7

And I'm still, whoa.

0:44.1

On today's Stone Choir, we're going to continue the two-part series that we began last week on the image of God.

0:51.8

The first episode that we did last week, we were specifically focused on the

0:56.1

image of God as it relates to that concept from Scripture that applies to every man. From the

1:03.8

moment of conception, every man has the image of God in the sense that we discussed last week.

1:09.5

Part of the reason we did two episodes, not only because we didn't want to do a four-hour episode,

1:12.9

is that this week we're going to be talking about one where that is not true at all.

1:17.3

The image of God, as we're discussing this week,

1:19.7

which is also the same term as used in scripture to talk about two different things.

1:24.2

This week we're talking about the image of God as it relates exclusively to the

1:28.6

regenerate Christian. What that means is that anyone who is not a believer does not have the image

1:34.9

of God. And part of the reason we segregated them is that that's completely contradictory to what

1:40.8

we said last week, except we're talking about two different things. Scripture uses the same term, so we're going to use the same term. So by segregating them, we're just going to say believers have the image of God, unbelievers don't have the image of God. It's not contradicting last week because we're talking about something else. It's related, and we'll talk about how it's related, but it's two distinct things. So I'm giving this caveat

2:01.5

up front because we're not going to have a bunch of excuses throughout the episode. Oh, and by the way,

2:06.5

here's the ask risk and it's not really the blah, blah, blah, no. Unless someone is regenerate,

2:11.4

they do not have the image of God. That's what we're talking about this week. So definitionally,

2:16.1

obviously, it's got to be something fundamentally different. Another way of talking about this week. So definitionally, obviously, it's got to be something fundamentally different.

2:19.1

Another way of talking about it is the sanctified Christian life. Really, what we're talking about

2:24.9

is, okay, you're Christian, now what? That sounds familiar if you've listened to most of our

2:29.1

episodes. That's kind of the purpose of Stone Choir. We're not talking about how to be saved. We are talking about once you are saved, how to be. Because that's important. That's in Scripture. That's what God is giving us as believers. You have been sanctified by God. You have been redeemed by God. You've been justified as a believer given the gift of faith okay now what are you done is that it
