about the ascent of Rishi Sunak to become Prime Minister of Britain and the

near ascent of Boris Johnson who looked for a few days as though he would somehow be able to storm back to office.

A friend of mine said tonight that it's remarkable how unremarkable the ascent of Sunung to the prime ministership feels.

Sunung of course is of Indian origin

and until very recently it was extremely rare for democracies to be governed by members of ethnic minority groups.

It remained somewhat rare but the number of senior politicians from such groups

and even the number of heads of governments from such groups has rapidly been rising over the course of the last decade.

The fact that we don't think of this as huge news is progress and even more important progress
