Summary

Lis Smith is a veteran political strategist affiliated with the Democratic Party. Most recently, she was senior adviser to Pete Buttigieg in his 2020 presidential campaign. Her memoir is Any Given Tuesday: A Political Love Story. In this week’s conversation, Yascha Mounk and Lis Smith discuss what she looks for in a successful candidate; the lessons she takes from years of courting independents and voters from across the aisle; and why she believes that Biden should run for reelection. My name is Seth Moskowitz and I'm an associate editor at Persuasion.

I wrote an article this week called Talking about Pederman, stroke is not ableism, which is about John Federman, the Democratic

0:35.2

candidate for Senate in Pennsylvania who had a stroke in May.

0:40.1

Federman's health condition came into the national news this week because of an interview that he did with NBC.

0:46.0

In that interview, Federman used a software on a computer in front of him that transcribed the questions he was being asked so he could read them because he was having difficulty with something called auditory processing.

0:58.0

But that itself isn't what actually brought Federman's condition into the national news. What did that were comments by the reporter

1:06.3

when she was introducing the segment in which she said that Pederman was having difficulty

1:10.6

understanding what she was saying when they were

1:12.8

chatting before they interview. And this is what caused the storm of

1:16.5

criticism from activists and journalists who called that reporter ableist. But what

1:21.5

they were really trying to do was to shut down any conversation about

1:24.7

Federman's condition and how it might impact his job in the Senate. But this is a

1:29.5

ridiculous thing to do. It's perfectly acceptable for reporters to be reporting on

1:34.3

candidates health conditions and it's also perfectly acceptable for reporters to

1:39.2

be reporting on a candidates health status and it's an important thing for voters to know about.

1:44.4

Unfortunately some people did go too far and make jokes at Federman's expense

1:50.4

like Fox News is Tucker Carlson and Mehmet Oz and this is obviously unacceptable

1:55.6

but that doesn't mean that all talk about Federman's disability should be out of

1:59.6

bounds or treated as a taboo. Candidates should be as transparent as possible about their health status and what will mean for their work once they're elected.

2:09.0

Because this is something that voters deserve to know about.

2:12.0

I hope you'll give my article a read and let me know what you think.
