Hello, I'm Sarah Longwell, publisher of the Bullwork, and I recently wrote a piece for persuasion

called The New Nialists. I've been a conservative my whole life and I've really seen a shift in the party

you know when I was coming up in the conservative movement the party was

committed to the idea of character mattering. There were reams of books written about

how important it was for leaders, for the country, to have people in politics be of good character. And that is a thing that has not only changed, not

only is that no longer something conservatives or the Republican Party seem to hold as a core value, but it's even worse than that.

They seem to be either celebrating or coming up with excuses for some of the most horrible behavior.

I wrote the piece actually before Paul Pelosi was attacked with a hammer and many Republicans and conservatives reacted. and good Republicans like Glenn Yunken said things like we're going to send

Nancy Pelosi back to be with her husband her husband who was in the ICU from

just being attacked. This sort of total absence now of commitment to character has become a defining feature of the

Republican Party and it's a total reversal of the party that I knew. You have candidates like

Herschel Walker who professes to be a

champion of fatherhood and he's had four secret children come to light during

his campaign. He's had several women allege that he paid for their abortions despite professing that he is pro-life.

And believing there should be no exceptions for rape or incest. And not only do Republicans tolerate that behavior,
