Summary

On November 20, 2012, 19-year-old Sage Smith was supposed to meet a man she had been seeing. She told her roommate where she was going and headed down to Charlottesville, Virginia's Main Street, where they were supposed to meet. Sage ran into her step-sister on her way, but was allegedly never seen after that. But the man she was supposed to meet, Erik McFadden, disappeared from the area just days after Sage. While he did give conflicting stories via phone and email, police have never been able to interview him in person. Now, over eight years later, both Sage and Erik have missing person reports filed on them, and a community is wondering why this case is still unsolved. Her family blames the fact that Sage is a black, transgendered woman for the lack of police response and publicity as compared to similar cases of white women in the area. But there are people out there who hold the answers to this case and have the ability to bring Sage home. Find us everywhere: linktr.ee/attwgpodSupport us on Patreon: patreon.com/attwgpodSources (for a full list, please visit our website). Just a few weeks away from her 20th birthday, the Charlottesville Virginia teen had moved out on her own,

0:14.3

started taking classes, and was seeing a new guy.

0:17.9

She had also just come out to her family as transgendered. Sage's life was full of

promise and big changes. On November 20th, 2012, Sage was going to meet the new guy she was

0:30.0

seeing before going back to her family's home for Thanksgiving. But Sage never made it home the

0:35.1

next day. And what seemed like a straightforward yet tragic case of violence has turned into an

0:41.7

eight-year-long mystery that has resulted in two missing persons reports.

0:48.2

When a person goes missing, there's a special kind of pain in the not knowing.

I want to tell the stories of those who never came home.

I want to tell you the story of Sage Smith. I'm Conan Gallagher. And I'm Ethan Flick. And this is,

and then they were gone. The Welcome back, everyone.

1:33.5

Welcome, welcome back.

1:34.9

Thank you for joining us for this story, which is semi-local to us.

Before we get started on Sage's case, though, I'd like to talk about some related issues in telling her story,

1:45.5

which strive to be inclusive and sensitive on this show, but, you know, we're human and,

1:51.5

like everyone else, we make mistakes sometimes. Sage's story is a little tricky because she

1:58.4

publicly came out as transgendered not too long before her disappearance,

2:03.5

like literally two weeks. She wrote something on Facebook, you know, about, you know, I'm a

2:09.9

girl now. Like, that's how I want you to refer to me. But since it had just happened, a lot of

2:16.4

people in her life hadn't like wrapped their heads around it.

2:20.8

Okay.
