reports about the air quality or lack thereof and communities that are near the

ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach where trucks are hauling goods along freight

corridors all day and all night and residents are breathing the exhaust and

developing health complications. Of course it's not just trucks and it's not just Los Angeles.

Air pollution is prevalent in many, if not most, major cities.

My guest today is Alante Whitmore.

She's a director of the Autonomous Vehicles Initiative

at the Washington DC Think Tank,

Securing America's Future Energy.

And she's here to discuss her newly completed study that examines both air and noise pollution

and a certain San Francisco neighborhood. And she shows how electric autonomous vehicles offer

the prospect of dramatic improvements in both.

I don't want to give too much away, but she found that if you switch even a small

portion of the fleet from internal combustion engines to electric avies,

the pollution reductions are disproportionately beneficial.

You know, we hear a lot about transportation equity,

mostly in terms of ensuring that residents of lower income

neighborhoods have access to rides. But we don't hear as often about those lower income neighborhoods
