Summary

Do you secretly keep score of all your sacrifices, hoping someone will eventually notice and applaud your efforts? That invisible scoreboard might be weighing you down more than you realize. During a recent conversation with an overwhelmed friend caring for elderly parents, I recognized a pattern many of us fall into – the belief that our sacrifices must mean something, that they're being recorded somewhere for future recognition. I was having a conversation with my friend the other day who I frankly, well, what I said to her

0:16.4

was, I think that you're doing too much.

0:19.3

I think that you need a bit more, I think that you need to allow a bit more help in. You need to

0:25.2

recruit the people in your life to support you. She's going through some stuff right now with elderly

0:28.9

parents. And frankly, I know that she is in a position to do this, but I think that she should

also employ more paid help in her world so that she can allow herself

0:41.0

to do what's most meaningful and right to her at this present time while also allowing her

0:47.7

life and all the things to run smoothly.

1:33.9

think about it. There is not a tally, there is not a ledger, there is not an Excel spreadsheet

1:38.8

anywhere that is adding up your sacrifices for retroactive applause one day. Okay, drop that expectation because

1:50.1

it is not coming. And when I spoke to my friend about this, I mean, we know this logically,

1:57.1

obviously, but somewhere within us, we sometimes feel that smug feeling of, okay, don't

2:02.7

worry, right? Like, I won't make this about me or I'll suck this up. And it does feel as if there

2:09.1

should be a reward for that, right? There's no running list of our sacrifices and there is no

2:14.3

running, running gifts, right? There's no one running around with presents saying,
