Road racing is back with the traditional curtain-raiser to the European season, the Grand Prix La Marseillaise, taking place in the south of France on Sunday.

In this episode we assess the latest instalment in the ongoing duel between Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel. It's a rivalry that spans the mud (and sand) of cyclo-cross, the cobbles and hills of the Classics and could flare up in the heat of July at the Tour de France this year.

It's kind of like we're looking ahead to E12D Vesage next week and I was just speaking to Lionel about

But it takes it back to 1980s when races didn't start in the searing heat of Australia or the Middle East,

and we started in the freezing cold in freezing cold Europe, riders in gloves and leg warmers and

novoshoes with extra layers of fat at that time, maybe an extra 10 kilos or so.

So it really feels like a bit of a throwback the racing beginning in Europe again, doesn't it Lionel?

Yeah, it does a bit and it's going to be a bit stop start, isn't it, through February?

Quite a lot of races already have been cancelled with the hope of some of them being rescheduled a bit later in the spring.

But yeah, they'll be racing at the E12D Vesage this week and the Tour de Provence, hopefully next week and then the World Tour gets started with the UAE Tour.

But it is a bit of a hipster start to the season really, isn't it?

It's quite an eclectic list of races.

And well, what we're seeing already, and I'll probably talk about this a little bit later on in the podcast, but we're seeing the concentration of really big name riders lining up for what has been an event that struggled over the years to attract an international field, a 12-D Vesage.
