This is East and West Africa in profound turmoil.

And we begin with a report in these last days of Shabab celebrating an attack on a prison in Somalia.

This is part of the long-standing conflict

where ordinarily would be called a civil war,

but that is not a term of

art that applies to a country, to a continent as fluid as Africa. This is East Africa, Somalia,

Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. And you will recall the United States plunged into this

during the George H.W. Bush administration many decades ago

coming up against people who called themselves commanders or warlords of technicals.

That was the language early on in the 20th century. Well, we're well past that now.

And Shabab is the organization that represents al-Qaeda in the area in the region,

a very dominating force that has for years assaulted the Mogadishu government,

which has been supported by the African Union heretofore.
