I'm John Batchew with my colleague Cleo Pascal, the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies,

whose watch on the Oceania, that's the Indo-Pacific.

It's extremely helpful to understand the depths of the contest between the People's Republic of China and the United States and its allies for the 21st century in Oceania. Cleo, my memory is that the Chagos Island

was first intended to be transferred to the governance of the Mauritius Islands by the United Kingdom that now has the lease and the

domination of the Chagos Islands, including Diego Garcia. But then there was or was not a

negotiation with Washington that did or did not forbid it. And I got lost. What is the present

status of Diego Garcia, given that it may or may not forbid it, and I got lost. What is the present status of Diego Garcia, given that

it may or may not be involved in the Iran war? Right. So the context for this is that these,

this is, Chegos Archipelago is about 50 or 60 islands.

They're mostly atolls.

So there are multiple islands within an atoll.

One of the atolls is Diego Garcia.

And on Diego Garcia is one of the United States most critical military base.

It's on UK soil.

It's technically a joint base. But it is paid for by the United States
