This is John Batchel. Colleague, Judy Dempsey, from Berlin. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace reports on the bitterness of the winter already. With the lights and power, electricity, and heating gone and keef, we're told. The worst winter of the war so far. And Judy celebrates the fact that Europe has power.

And what is interesting is that especially German television and indeed large parts of the European media are giving quite a lot of attention to Ukraine,

where temperatures have slipped to minus 20. I mean, that's so cold, that's Celsius here. And it's bitterly cold.

And at the same time, President Putin's forces are bombing the infrastructure, the civilian

infrastructure, military infrastructure, the capital key. Day by day, there's no heating, no water,

no sanitation, schools are closed, kids are staying

home until at least February. It's a state of emergency. So in some ways there's an element

of European saying, oh gosh, it's very cold here. On the other hand, when you tell them, and I speak

to them regularly or when television radio says, hang on, look what's happening in Ukraine,
