This is John Batchel, a conversation with my colleague Jim McTag in Lancaster County, where the Costco

has a special barn of hay for the Amish who drive their horse and buggies to pick up supplies.

And the tragedy of that now and again, driving next to or around or with people who are using horsepower.

And it doesn't go well, Jim tells me.

It's a challenge.

Here he is to explain the wonderful Amish culture and the automobile.

Now, I wait, but I tell you, you it's very dangerous we had an Amish

woman killed this week in a car buggy collision there are no statistics yet for

2025 but in 2024 there were over 30 collisions between cars and horses and

buggies.

And I think it's primarily because local motorists are very careless and very impatient

and they'll try to pass too close.

They'll spook the horse or they'll side swipe the horse.

So it's a sad, sad situation that the two cultures can't be more patient with one another.
