Summary

China's Nuclear Threat to JapanJack BurnhamBurnham documents China's escalated nuclear threats against Japan, explicitly threatening nuclear weapons deployment if Tokyo militarily intervenes in Taiwan conflict scenarios, marking a significant shift from Chinese minimal deterrence posture toward aggressive nuclear coercion. Burnhamcharacterizes this escalation as reflecting Chinese regional anxiety regarding American-led alliance structures, particularly strengthening U.S.-Japan security cooperation. Burnham recommends robust reinforcement of American-Japanese alliance relationships and extended nuclear deterrence commitments as essential counterbalance to Chinesenuclear blackmail and regional hegemonic ambitions.

Was this a surprise to you, Jack?

Have you come across the Chinese threatening nuclear weapons on Japan before?

forces as a measure of self-defense. In response to that, the various Chinese state media outlets

1:25.9

China is attempting, in some ways, to raise the level of escalation in part out of anxiety.

1:32.5

I think that for a long time, China has watched warily as allies and partners around Taiwan, whether it be the Philippines, Japan, and the United States,

1:46.1

maintaining or even in some cases, strengthening ties to Taiwan, China views this very warily.

And I think what we see here in terms of the escalation to the nuclear threat is really a sign

1:58.0

of deep anxiety and panic on the part of Xi Jinping and then the CCP in order

2:03.1

to attempt to dissuade Japan in particular, you know, a key regional ally and partner from

strengthening its ties with Taipei.

Chinese nuclear weapons policy. You report that they have no first use, but it's modified. How so?
