Summary

Episode 14: With Primoz Roglic and Jumbo-Visma closing in on their first Tour de France title we look back at the journey they've been on to reach this point.

This episode of Kilometre 0 is a sequel to a Friends of the Podcast episode called Chasing Sky that Richard Moore made a couple of winters ago. It told the story of how the Dutch team had its sights on Team Sky (now Ineos Grenadiers) and were seeking to replicate their success in grand tours.

Since Roglic's emergence in 2016 he and the team have made steady progress towards their goal, using stage races and then the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España to hone their tactics. Smart recruitment, including the signing of former Giro champion Tom Dumoulin, has strengthened the team and has helped them close in on Ineos.

In this episode, we hear from Richard Plugge, who helped rejuvenate a team that was struggling after Rabobank pulled out as the team's long term sponsor. Plugge addressed and changed the culture within the team and set his sights on Tour success. Sepp Kuss, one of the stars who has shone in support of Roglic, also talks about the team's progression.

Plus we hear from Dave Brailsford, who built success upon success at Team Sky and has now seen the first serious, sustained challenge to their supremacy at the Tour.

It's been a gradual progression for them and obviously you've got some very, very talented

0:18.6

bike riders in their roster. Obviously the big standouts is obviously Wolvenart who

0:23.8

has been incredible here and Roger has been a relatively slow burn over a four or five

0:29.2

year period. But then I've also reignited some Robert Kasink as probably the best he's

0:34.4

gone for a long time. He's been doing an incredible role. A lot of the dirty work on the climbing

0:39.9

and even flatter stages. George Bennett's again, he's been improving so Tony Martin's been

0:44.8

around for a long, long time but he's obviously found his nation in that role. So they've got

0:49.3

a very, very well balanced team and they've certainly been the most dominant team here this

0:54.6

year.

0:56.6

You've got to be impressed, I mean, I've had it off to them. I've been saying for a little

1:00.7

while when you see their build over the last few years. And I think their story with Primoche

1:04.9

is absolutely fantastic. When you think about how they got him, where he's from, the sport

1:10.8

he's from, I mean, I think it's exceptional and it's great for our sport, it's a brilliant

1:16.0

story to be told. So, hats off to them, I think they've done a great job. I think it's strange

1:21.2

you know, when you do think, a lot of people set sights on sky and in the us, but now

1:26.4

it's a change, it's a change, you know, I think we know with Dave and in the us they'll

1:31.8

turn around, they've got fantastic talent, Egan's a fantastic talent, he's obviously just

1:36.0

had a bit of a shocker, you know, and that pressure and everything year after winning

1:39.4

must, we know it's tough, but yeah, hats off to Visma, they've done a great job.

1:45.2

I think that is the, their own version of a super team, you know, and we all saw it coming,
