Summary

Ashley sits down with Eric King, author of A Clean Hell: Anarchy and Abolition in America’s Most Notorious Dungeon. Eric is an anarchist who spent years locked inside a federal maximum security prison. In this episode, he offers a raw and powerful look into his experience in the prison system and the reality of surviving extreme isolation with his path as a practicing pagan behind bars.

Eric shares how he built spiritual connection in an environment designed to strip people of identity, community, and meaning. From spellcrafting using whatever materials he could find, to forging a relationship with his Goddess while in prison, he gives an intimate glimpse into the rituals and resilience that sustained him through some of the harshest conditions in the U.S. prison system. This episode offers a conversation about survival, resistance, and the magic we create even in the darkest places.

Hey everyone. Welcome back to seeking witchcraft. I'm your host, Ashley. And today I'm joined by Eric King, author of A Clean Hell, Anarchy and Abolition in America's Most Notorious Dungeon.

0:10.5

Eric's writing dives deep into life and resistance within the U.S. prison system. And today we're going to be talking about something rarely discussed.

0:17.9

And that is practicing witchcraft while incarcerated and what spirituality

0:21.8

and magic can look like in some of the most restrictive environments. So Eric, welcome to the show.

0:26.7

Can you tell the listeners a little bit about yourself? Yeah. Hi. Thanks for having me. My name is Eric.

0:31.8

I was released from federal prison almost two years ago. And I practiced when I was allowed to and when I was

0:39.5

able, Wiccan and other paganesque religions while inside. And I'm just happy to be here talking about

0:46.7

them. Great. Yeah. So I was telling Eric right before we got started that there is actually a

0:52.8

portion of listeners who do come from the

0:55.2

prison system who are able to access this show. I've just found out through the years that

1:01.2

some prisons will allow tablets for their prisoners. And because this podcast is considered

1:07.6

under the religious category, it's able to be accessed by those who are incarcerated.

1:12.8

So I think there is actually a big portion of people who this conversation is really going to

1:18.6

be very beneficial for. So I'm excited to be able to help that population. I think it's going to be

1:24.5

really useful. But before we get into that, as I mentioned, you have a book,

1:28.2

A Clean Hell. So can you tell us a little bit about this book and what inspired you to write it and just what

1:34.0

it's about? Yeah, a clean hell is based off my experiences of going to trial when you're already

1:40.5

inside prison. And in federal trial, no one wins in the federal system.

1:46.4

There's less than 1% of people win at federal trial. And so I counted on myself. I counted

1:51.6

on my goddesses. And we ended up winning, which is just the rarest thing. And then on the back

1:57.1

end of that, we got sent to the ADX federal supermax, which is equally as rare.

2:03.2

There's only 300 people in there at any given time.
