I'm John Batchler. I welcome my colleague and friend Cliff May, the founder and president of the

Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. It's 1959 at the United Nations, a gathering of eagles.

Standing there is a man named Abdul Nasser, the much celebrated leader of Egypt and Syria, and the

man who's going to remake the Arab world in his own image. He's

beautifully dressed. A very handsome man with a large bridge of a nose smiling oddly, however. Why?

Because next to him, they're surrounded by a deep, deep media questions flying over the top of the

heads of the men in front.

But standing next to him is a ruffian-looking fellow with an untrimmed beard.

His fatigue army uniform looks like he's still in bed rather than just rolled out of bed.

He's got a great big grin on his face and he's talking away to the media while Nassar stands there silently going,

Who is this guy?

That guy is Fidel Castro.

Socialism in the Arab world meets socialism in the Cuban world, and socialism doesn't know what to say.

Who was Nassar at that moment?

when it suited him but he also jaileded and executed leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood,

an organization created in 1920, just a few years after the fall of the last Islamic

empire and caliphate, I mean the Ottoman Empire and Caliphate, and, you know, that the Muslim Brotherhood lives on today, and it still wants to do what it

wanted to do then.

It wants to reestablishment of a powerful Islamic caliphate in the world.
