Summary

The 1995 Australian GP was a chaotic race that brought the curtain down on the first part of the Bring Back V10s era in many ways. It was F1's final visit to Adelaide, the last time we saw a V12 Ferrari, the final race before the distinctive high cockpit sides were introduced, and the last race that was started with green lights!

Ben Anderson and Matt Beer join Glenn Freeman to discuss how Damon Hill came through a crazy, attritional race to win by two laps from a smoking Olivier Panis, while the second Williams of David Coulthard famously smashed into the wall at the pit entry while leading.

And earlier in the weekend, F1 narrowly avoided tragedy when Mika Hakkinen suffered a horrible accident at the fastest corner of the circuit - and it wasn't long before rumours emerged that Alain Prost could stand in for him in early 1996 if required.

There's not much about the latter stages of 1995 for Damon Hill to look back on fondly,

0:16.0

but winning the final race of that year by two laps, at least put a nice bow on a season to forget.

0:22.1

But it's debatable that the winning margin, even Hill called Ridiculous, is the most

0:26.8

memorable thing about that weekend, with his Williams teammate, David Culfard, stealing a fair

amount of the limelight by plowing into the wall at the tight pit entry when leading the race.

0:36.3

Unfortunately, it was also another weekend where the dangers of mid-90s F1 were frighteningly

0:42.0

apparent, as Mika Hakenen was declared minutes away from death, were it not for life-saving

0:47.0

intervention from circuit doctors after a horrifying crash in qualifying.

To revisit all of those topics and many more from the final race of 1995 with me, Glenn

Freeman, we have Ben Anderson and Matt Beer, who I will say were both very insistent that

1:02.9

they wanted to appear on this episode when I first sent the list around for this series.

1:07.7

So, Ben, let's come to you first.

What is it about this race that appeals so much?

1:12.4

What's the first thing that comes to mind with Australia 95 that made you go, yes, I must be on

1:17.3

that episode? Well, the first thing that comes to mind is actually a sort of guttural sound made

1:22.5

by Murray Walker, which is, ah! And that's David Coulthard crashing into the pit lane. That is the thing

1:28.4

that I remember most about this race. But the reason I was so insistent to be on this podcast,

1:34.3

apart from the fact that obviously I'm a well-known massive Damon Hill fan, is also, this is

1:40.5

just childhood nostalgia talking. Like, this era of F1 car is my favourite era.

1:47.0

I accept that objectively the cars from kind of 92
