Today marks the end of the beginning.

In the spring of 2018, I received an email from a woman named Helena Rose.

She asked me if I would please consider reinvestigating the murder of Jim Melgar.

Helena is the sister-in-law of Liz Rose.

I reviewed the Melgar case just like I review any other case during the screening process.

And it didn't take long for me to realize that very likely an innocent woman had been sent to prison.

The prosecution's theory of the case seemed pathetic on its face.

Sandy had no motive in the circumstances of her confinement in the closet,

appeared to make it impossible for her to have killed her husband.

The defense theory, on the other hand, made perfect sense.

It was simple.

Home invaders broke into the house, hit Sandy over the head.

She had a seizure and suffered from a very common side-effect of seizures.

Retrograde amnesia.

She couldn't tell police what happened to her husband because she couldn't remember.

I launched into the investigation in the same way that I've tackled every investigation.

Phase 1 is always to examine the prosecution's case first,

to determine if a wrongful conviction actually occurred.
