When conducting any type of criminal investigation,

identifying similar incidents that occurred within a reasonable area and time is a critical first step.

In fact, it's textbook.

Literally, the problem with the Melgar case is that no one from the Harris County Sheriff's Department seems to have even considered the possibility that this was a property crime that resulted in a murder,

as opposed to a premeditated attack on Jim Melgar.

Had detectives Karazal and Ducey, or Maurice Carpenter for that matter, entered into this investigation without blinders on,

and considered more than just their initial theory throughout their investigation, we may very well have ended up with an entirely different result.

Every criminal investigation textbook that I've ever read says the same thing when it comes to property crimes.

Step 1. Secure and Process the crime scene.

Step 2. Interview any and all potential witnesses.

And Step 3. Determine if the crime is similar in MO to any other incidents within geographical proximity.

It's that third step that was ignored by these investigators.

And in action, that I believe put an innocent woman behind bars and left a killer walking free.
