Dr. Bickham was curious how long it had been since Lacey had actually seen a doctor.

He was the one who tracked down Dr. Donald Hope, who said he last saw Lacey for treatment in 2002.

Lacey would have been just 17 years old.

Lacey would have been 25, and Dr. Hope recalls the conversation revolving around Lacey's

autism diagnosis.

He says her parents had a tough time accepting that Lacey had special needs.

Lacey reportedly was refusing to leave the house,

even to see a doctor. Dr. Hope says that he suggested they force her, but as we now know,

Sheila and Clay never followed through. Dr. Bickham sent requests for medical records from all

nearby hospitals and got no response.

It appears that Lacey had not seen a doctor since she was 17. That's 19 years.

According to what I've read, Dr. Bickham might have been the one most affected by this case.

He said, quote,

The scene was sickening. I've seen some horrible things in my life, but nothing like this.

I couldn't eat for a week, and I cried for a week.

In December of 2022, less than a year after Lacey's death, Dr. Bickham resigned.

More than anything else, I became obsessed with trying to find an answer to the question

that I'm sure is also on your mind.
