I'm your host, Gene McCarthy. I'm the author of the recovery blog Unpickled. I tell my story there,

Well, many of us spend our time in active addiction, keeping secrets and staying silent.

Many of us were raised to be pleasing, to be sweet, and to never show anger or negative emotions.

And sometimes that silence fuels the discomfort behind our drinking and then as drinking

unferled nature of addiction in our lives, the secret keeping escalate. Kind of out of a

two-sided hope. On one hand, perhaps wishing we could quietly turn it around before anyone notices

and on the other hand, hiding problems so no one will tell us to stop drinking

so is it any wonder that it feels so good to open up and start talking honestly when we connect with other people in recovery

well i met today's guest julie at a yoga retreat in mexico this past spring and it was her first experience of sitting in the presence of other women in recovery and

speaking openly about her journey into sobriety.
