But the stories that made headlines in decades past aren't necessarily remembered today.

I'll examine a case that's maybe lesser known today, but was huge when it happened.

Thank you. This is Crimes at the Centuries. Rob Kisle's Cardier Watch was still on the breakfast table when his wife told the couple's two household employees that he had already gone to work.

The live-in housemaid and live-in nanny would have thought it odd, because their boss was never

without his watch. His wife, Nancy, ignored them. She was scurrying about trying to show

motherly concern while dodging a question from the nanny about how she had injured her hand,

which was freshly bandaged. Burned on the toaster, Nancy said, and let's get the children

off to school. Then she said she might have a few errands for the workers to run. Nancy, who would

usually shop all day for clothes and perfume and jewelry, was usually happy to let

Min and Connie do the domestic and maternal things. But today she took Min into the kitchen

to tell her not to worry about cleaning the primary bedroom. Not today. Okay? Today, by the way, was November 2, 2003. And the Kissel household,

it's important to note, was in Hong Kong. After Nancy told Min to steer clear of the bedroom,

she made a phone call to a man in New Hampshire where there was a significant time difference.

It was evening there. Then she sent

an email to a hired clown she had a meeting with and wrote that, unfortunately, her husband was

sick and she needed to reschedule. After that, Nancy had some instructions for Connie. She told her to

buy bleach powder, rope, packing tape, and polyethylene sheets. Then

Nancy herself ordered packing cartons from a moving company before going into town to buy
