There are two major types of criminal investigations, namely evidence-based investigations and suspect-based investigations.

Every investigation should always begin as evidence-based.

This only makes sense.

Evidence should lead you to a suspect, not the other way around.

Proper form is to gather evidence and analyze it.

See if that evidence points towards any particular potential suspect.

Once the scales reach a breaking point, that is when you shift to a suspect-based investigation.

During the evidence-based phase, detectives should be interviewing everyone who was closely

connected with the victim or victims, and anyone who was in the proximity of the crime,

and may have witnessed something.

Fingerprints should be collected and analyzed, blood, hair, fibers, etc.

A little murder weapon should be collected and analyzed, and most importantly, the investigation

should not shift to suspect-based until after the detectives have received an autopsy report.

To put it bluntly, it's very difficult to figure out who did something until you at least

know what was done.

Unfortunately, what we consistently see in a large majority of wrongful convictions, in

this case, is no exception.

But the situations where police begin their investigation with a suspect, and work backwards

from there, trying to find and force evidence to fit their predetermined theory.

Within hours of the discovery of Stevie, Michael, and Christopher, Jerry Driver, Steve Jones,

and James Sudbury had already pegged Amy and Eccles as the killer.
