What is the right way to deal with a ghost? If at first a ghost just kind of seems to be like,

hey, I'm here. Should you ask it to leave right away? Or should you make it feel welcome and give it a place

in your family? And at what point can one family's ordeal with the supernatural go from a

public concern to a scene of touristic observation? What effect might that have on the ghost

Music Just this morning, I had two weird encounters. First, as I was standing at my kitchen sink looking out across my backyard, I could have sworn I saw a huge dark figure lurking in the

hollow behind our house.

It was either a huge person in a cloak and hood, like the Nazgul from Lord of the Rings,

or it was Bigfoot. I watched it for a while, and if I wanted to, I could swear I saw it move.

And then, in the road, just up the street, I could see from my bedroom window,

what I swore was a dead deer. It made no sense because no one goes fast enough on our street

to kill a deer like that. So I ran to get my binoculars, and first I took a look at the whatever

it was in the backyard. Listen, I don't know what it was,

but it was neither a Nazgul nor a Bigfoot. It was just like a tree or something. And the dead

deer, that was a Home Depot bag. My point is, sometimes we see what we want to see, not that I

wanted to see a Nazgul or a dead deer, Lord knows. And if our imaginations

are active enough, we can see some pretty wacky stuff. But for Deborah and Tony Pickman,

seeing things that weren't there was the least of their problems. It's one thing to trick your

brain into thinking you see a ghost, it's quite another to watch

scratches form on your body in real time, seemingly out of nowhere.
