It was July 1994, I was 12 years old, and I was standing in a single file line in a parking

line in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, waiting to board a bus.

It was early in the morning, but it was already hot.

The summer humidity seemed to be oozing up from the asphalt as I impatiently shifted

my weight back and forth between my air maxes, just waiting.

It was day 4 of the week long Dean Smith Carolina basketball school, and this was the fourth

straight day that hundreds of us were out here in this parking lot of the Grandville Towers

dormitory waiting for one particular kid.

This kid we were waiting on wasn't even in my age group, not even on my bus, but the

rule was no one could leave until everyone had come out of the dorms and gotten their

lines for morning check-in.

The camp counselors were circling in the parking lot, all calling for this kid.

They would repeatedly call his name each time a little more irritated than the last,

and ask him to please report to his squad for morning check-in.

Eventually, after what seemed like forever to a 12-year-old, this kid emerged from the

dorm entrance.

And just like he had done every day before, he strolled out nonchalantly with a rye smile.

He was either unaware of the holdup he had caused, or he was very aware, and very satisfied

that he'd made everyone wait yet again.

The kid's name was Lenny Starner.

We are two guys in our early 40s, and this is Chasing Scratch Season 5.
