Less than three months after the not guilty verdict of Philip Mitchell Brailsford, the Federal Department of Justice and the FBI opened an investigation into the Mesa Police Department, and specifically the events of the night that resulted in the death of Daniel Schaver.

On Thursday, March 8, 2018, the Mesa PD came forward and said they had received

a subpoena by the Department of Justice for all relevant documentation corresponding to January

18, 2016. Detective Steve Barry said it was a civil rights investigation against former

Officer Mitch Brailsford and he said the Mesa PD would

fully cooperate. According to an article from Arizona Central written by Uriel Garcia, the Mesa

police union said they are, quote, not worried and are confident the DOJ will find no wrongdoing.

Mitch Brailsford's lawyer said, quote,

It appears to me to be more political than legal. There's no logical or legal reason to believe

that a different fact finder would come to a different conclusion.

Though Mitch's lawyers seemed to ignore the entirety of the United States population,

liberals and conservatives alike, who had reviewed and seen the video, were convinced that

Daniel Schaever had been murdered.

The claim that the investigation by the DOJ was politically motivated seems to also hold no

weight.

In 2018, Donald Trump was president of the United States, and he, as well as

his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, both publicly called for less interference from the federal

government and local police departments. And it was Donald Trump's own Justice Department,

who announced this investigation into Mesa, Arizona.

Now it's true the DOJ operates independently of the executive branch, but a lot of those people
