While Daniel was lying face down in a hotel hallway in Mesa, Arizona, his family was

a thousand miles away, back home in Granbury, Texas, a little city in the central part

of the state with a population of around 10,000.

Before we continue Danny's story, let's go back in time to two and a half months before the shooting.

Daniel's wife, Lainey, had temporarily suspended her work as a birth and bereavement dula

in her established business called The birthing tree because she herself

was in fact four months pregnant. Not with hers and Daniel's child though. You'll see that

Lainey had volunteered to be a surrogate for her two friends, Ginger and Sanjit. From a public blog post

Believing in what cannot be seen may be the most difficult leap of faith we ever take as humans.

And here I am an expectant mother who shows no physical or visible signs of pregnancy.

No bulging belly, well, at least not from

the pregnancy, and no morning sickness. I actually wish I could take that from Lainey and have it

myself. I hate that she has been so sick and I feel so helpless to do anything to make it

better for her. Yet I am pregnant, pregnant with hope, with a growing love for my child.

Every day my heart feels a little bigger, a little fuller, a little more as if it will burst with

love for my baby girl. And no one can see it, so it's easy to forget or ignore that I am expecting

a baby and that I feel pregnant and that

I'm going to have a real live baby in my arms.
