Summary

"How does Galatians 4 shape our understanding of Christian freedom today? How do we understand the tension between the ‘works of the flesh’ and the ‘fruit of the Spirit,’ and what does this practically look like in the life of a believer? In Galatians 6, Paul talks about bearing one another’s burdens, not growing weary in doing good, and reaping what we sow. How do these instructions fit into Paul’s larger argument about freedom in Christ and life in community? In today's episode, Director of Discipleship for the Porch, Tyler Moffett, discusses Galatians 4-6 and what it looks like to be fully formed by Christ, the fruit of the Spirit, and how we can experience full freedom through Christ. All right now, if we're honest, reading the Bible consistently can be a challenge, but it's never too late to start and we're in this together.

My name's Tyler Moffitt, and I serve here at Watermark as the director of discipleship for the porch.

I'm filling in for Emma today as we cover the second half

0:21.7

of the book of Galatians. I want to ask this question as we begin. Have you ever longed for someone

0:27.7

to really know Jesus so much that it was painful to you? This is actually what Paul is expressing

0:34.0

for the Galatians in the passage we're reading today. You see it in Galatians

0:37.8

chapter 4 verse 19. He says, my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth

0:45.4

until Christ is formed in you. Now that's next level kind of anguish. So my wife, Jen, is

0:51.8

pregnant with our fourth child right now. So I've seen childbirth a few times.

0:56.0

And I think it's pretty bold for a single guy like Paul to identify with the pain of childbirth.

1:01.0

So if you're a single brother out there, would not recommend that for you guys.

1:05.0

But what's the point?

1:06.0

Paul's saying he's anguishing to the point where he feels like he's in labor for the Galatians to truly

1:13.0

understand what they have access to in Christ, for Christ to be, as he's saying, fully formed

1:19.2

in them. This is the idea of Christian formation or spiritual formation. So how does Paul describe

1:26.2

Christ being fully formed? If you've been tracking with us,

1:29.8

remember he spent the beginning of the letter clarifying the gospel that we're not justified

1:35.3

by works of the law, but rather by faith in Jesus, the Messiah. So it's through him alone that

1:41.6

we're declared righteous before God. But Paul goes on from there to say in the section that we're reading today that the gospel

1:48.3

doesn't just save us from something.
