Everybody, what is going on? You know what time it is. You're listening to join the Journey podcast with your host, Emma, daughter. Thanks for joining. Today, we are reading Luke 5 and 6, and I'm in the podcast studio with Faithful Watermark member, John Garza. Good morning, Emma. Thank you for having me. You're welcome. John, for those who don't know you, what has God done in your life?

0:22.5

Yeah, I grew up in a city southeast of Houston called Deer Park. When I was in sixth grade, my family started going to a small Southern Baptist Church, and that is when I heard the gospel of Jesus Christ for the first time. I believed it to be true, and that's when I received the grace of God. I repented of my sins and put my faith in Jesus.

In the next 16 years of my life

has really been marked received the grace of God. I repented of my sins and put my faith in Jesus. In the next 16 years of my life has really been marked by the Spirit of God convicted me greatly of my sin, the Word of God comforting and piercing my soul, and the Church of God edifying my faith to become more Christ-like. And then a little bit about me is second to receiving the grace of God. The best decision that I've ever made was marrying my wife, Kristen, who is the best of women because she fears the Lord. And we have a six-month-old son named Johnny, who is probably listening to this taking a lot of notes right now.

1:02.6

Hey, Johnny. Wow, a gifted youngster at six months. That's amazing. And here at Watermark, how are you involved?

1:36.4

Yeah, so here at Watermark, I get to serve on our marriage team. So I started roughly around five months ago, and it's been a true joy because I get to see ministries like re-engage or merge, and primarily I run in the lane of merge. It's been really sweet just to work with pre-married couples who are looking to get married and be prepped for that. I love it. How about we start with Luke 5? And I've got a question for you. In Luke 5, Jesus tells Peter to drop his nets again, even though he's been fishing all night.

1:43.5

So why do you think Peter actually does it? And what can we learn about trusting Jesus when it doesn't make sense?

1:50.2

Yeah, the passage in Luke 5 is so rich. It is marked by people who have faith in Jesus. And with Peter, you know, Jesus is standing on the Sea of Galilee and he saw the boats. And so as he

1:55.4

is teaching, he got in one of the boats and Simon Peter pushed him off a little bit. And in this

2:00.5

passage, it is so fitting for the Messiah

2:02.7

to add some divine work to his words for the benefit

2:05.9

of the spectators.

2:07.1

When Simon Peter, you know, heard Jesus to tell him to cast out the net,

2:11.0

again, Simon Peter is an experienced fisherman,

2:13.3

so we would assume that he might have known

2:14.7

he wouldn't catch anything from his initial response

2:17.1

of toiling all night.

2:18.4

Totally.

2:18.9

However, Simon Peter has a great statement of faith, and he says, at your word, I will let down

2:24.4

the nets.

2:25.4

And a great pastor of old Charles Spurgeon, he says, it is a blessed thing to see Christ in the

2:30.8

boat while you cast out the net.
